Riesling – Biltmore Estate

Our wine tonight is the Riesling from Biltmore Estate Winery in Asheville, North Carolina.

Vintage 2018

Pale yellow in color.

Nose of apricots, honeysuckle, peaches, and fresh pear.

Crisp, semi-sweet with balanced acidity.

Flavor notes of Granny Smith Apples, pears, wildflower honey, lemon, and cantaloupe, finishing with more minerality.

13.5% ABV. (not a typo)

This one is really enjoyable, better than most Rieslings in the under $20 category.

Biltmore Estate winemaker Sharon Fenchak hit it out of the ballpark with this vintage. Biltmore does grow several acres of Riesling on the estate. Though, this wine isn’t produced entirely with Estate grown fruit, sourcing of the fruit is critical to producing high quality wines.

Spiced Apple Cyser – Honeygirl Meadery

Our wine tonight is the Spiced Apple Cyser from Honeygirl Meadery in Durham, North Carolina.

Cyser is a mead fermented with apple juice – combination of a mead and cider.

Local Wildflower honey fermented with North Carolina apple cider.

Color of bright gold. Sunshine in a bottle.

Still, showing no carbonation.

Nose of a cold slice of apple pie and cinnamon.

Full bodied mouthfeel with the sweetness of a mead blending with the tartness of an Cider.

Complex flavor profile with crisp notes of apples and sweet undertones of wildflower honey, showing a depth of baking spices with subtle hints of citrus.

Twenty-Fifteen BDX – Mountain Brook Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the Twenty-Fifteen BDX from Mountain Brook Vineyards in the Tryon Foothills of North Carolina.

Vintage 2015

Bordeaux blend of North Carolina grown fruit.

We aerated for 90 minutes.

Aged in a combination of French and American oak.

Dark ruby in color with a bright ruby rim.

Consistent uniform cascading full legs.

Expressive bouquet of blackberries, plums, prunes, fig preserves and dark chocolate.

Dry, medium-full bodied with medium tannins.

Black currant is forefront on the tongue, with subtle hints of blackberries, raisins, black licorice, and graphite, finishing with lingering notes of pipe tobacco and oak.

13.5% ABV

Our wine tonight is the Petit Manseng from Addison Farms Vineyard in Leicester, North Carolina.

Vintage 2019.

Petit Manseng.

Vineyard lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains North of Asheville at an elevation of 2500 feet.

Bright gold in color.

Aromatic bouquet of peaches, lemonade, pineapples, and mandarin oranges.

Off dry with crisp acidity.

Flavor notes of lemon curd, pineapple, mango, papaya, honeysuckle, pear, apricot, roasted almonds, and ruby grapefruit.

Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat.

Grapes harvested of the Yadkin Valley AVA.

Fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Salmon in color.

Bouquet of strawberries, cherries, cranberries, and spice.

Dry, crisp, medium bodied with subtle tannins.

Notes of cranberries, crabapples, raspberries, orange blossom honey, pomegranate, early season honeydew melons, and a delicate mineral finish.

Merlot – Parker-Binns Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the award winning Merlot from Parker-Binns Vineyard in Tryon, North Carolina.

Vintage 2017.

Estate grown Merlot.

Tryon Foothills wine region.

Dark ruby in color with a soft garnet rim.

Decanted for one hour.

Soft bouquet of blackberry jam, red plum, tobacco, vanilla, and cedar.

Long slow cascading legs.

Medium to full bodied and velvety with lush tannins.

Dry yet fruity and complex with notes of red plums, dark cherries, raspberries, dried figs, pomegranate, boiled peanuts, damp forest, Earl Grey tea, and a lingering earthy finish.

Tonight we are celebrating National Drink Wine Day with a bottle of Petit Manseng from Parker-Binns Vineyard.

Estate grown Petit Manseng.

Tryon Foothills of North Carolina.

Vintage 2018

Winemaker Justin Taylor marveled, during the harvest of 2018, this fruit was able to take on a bronzing rarely seen on other white varietals of Western North Carolina.

Color of bright straw, shimmering.

Expressively aromatic, noticeable the moment of uncorking. Robust notes of pineapple upside down cake, mandarin orange, lemon curd, and mango.

Medium bodied, crisp acidity, and rich.

Complex on the palate with overlying tones of citrus, florals, and minerality. Honeysuckle lingers on the dry finish.

14% ABV.

Strawberry Vanilla – Honeygirl Meadery

Our wine tonight is the Strawberry Vanilla from Honeygirl Meadery.

Honey Strawberry Wine with natural flavors.

Style of Melomel.

Melomel is mead fermented with fruit for added flavors.

Metheglin style mead is made with spices to enhance the flavor.

Light amber in color.

Nose of wildflower honey, yet as the mead opens up more of strawberry aromas start to surface.

Sweet and aromatic.

Flavor notes of strawberries and silky vanilla custard with an expressive wildflower honey finish which lingers.

Medium mouthfeel with some mild tannins.

12.5% ABV

The aromas and flavors take some time to open up.

Carolina Crisp – Chatham Cider Works

Our wine tonight is the Carolina Crisp from Chatham Cider Works in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Straw in color, perhaps unpolished gold.

Label describes as effervescent, though we’d call this more of a sparkling. It’s bubbly!

Nose and taste are spot on with notes of freshly picked green apple.

True to it’s claim, crisp with a tart finish.

6% ABV.

We picked up this bottle at Fair Game Beverage Company next to the Cidery and which serves as the cideries tasting room.

UNTAPPD rates this cider at 3.48.

We make small-batch hard cider in Pittsboro from North Carolina apples.

We work with local apple growers to source the apples that give us the complex, satisfying flavor of a traditional hard cider.

King’s Mountain Rosé – Overmountain Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the King’s Mountain Rosé from Overmountain Vineyards in Tryon, North Carolina.

Fermented of 100% Merlot grape.

Vintage 2017.

The 2017 growing season in the Tryon Foothills was challenging with overly excessive rainfall.

Gorgeous color of light rust or red-orange.

Fruity nose, hints of strawberries, raspberries, honeydew melons, and rose petals.

Crisp on the palate, with big citrus notes, hints of pink grapefruit, cranberry, tangerine, and lime, fading to a dry creamy finish.

13% ABV
